India has a rich cultural heritage that lies in its music and dance. Dance is described as a sequence of elegant and intricate movements to the music to which it is performed at an event. In our country classical dance has a lot of significance. It is not only meant for entertaining self but it also serves as a beautiful way to express the deep feelings of the heart. It also makes you feel connected to God. Back in Ancient times , It was performed to appease the deities and was considered a vital element of spirituality.
Odissi is a highly passionate, ecstatic and sensuous form of dance. In Odissi, the whole body of the dancer is their instrument and the means of artistic expression. It creates devotion in one's mind and heart. Odissi dance is not just about the movements and expressions; it is also about the costumes and jewelry that adorn the dancers.
Ornamentation is a part of aharya abhinaya and aharya is important because it is visual art. The design of Odissi ornaments has been taken from temple sculptures. Silver jewelry is a traditional form of jewelry that has been popular in India for centuries. It is a jewelery that exudes a sense of history and tradition. Both Odissi and its Jwewllery share a deep connection, as both are rooted in tradition and heritage. The intricate movements of the dance form are enhanced by the elaborate jewelry worn by the dancers. The silver jewelry, with its shiny and polished finish complements the vibrant costumes and adds a touch of elegance to the performance.
Not only does it enhance the visual appeal of Odissi dance, but it also holds a symbolic significance. The jewelry worn by the dancers represents the divine adornments of the deities worshiped in the temples of Odisha. It is believed that wearing these jewelry pieces during the performance brings blessings and divine energy to the dancers.
The Jewellery helps to convey the emotions and characters portrayed in the performance. Each piece of jewelry, from the elaborate headpiece to the intricate earrings, the long chain necklace bangles, and the lightweight but heavy Benga Patia (waist belt ) has a specific meaning and purpose.
The Tahiya, the statement piece in the Odissi dance jewellery, represents more than just an accessory. It symbolizes the connection between the dancer and the other realms they depict through their performance. The Tahiya is designed to mirror the temple spokes of Odisha. It holds a spiritual significance and has an architectural beauty. When positioned on the dancer’s head, it enhances their silhouette, adding an element of majesty and elegance to their overall appearance.
The Earrings play a vital role in Odissi Dance. It utilizes the body as a medium to convey mythological narratives and emotions. The dance’s visual impact is significantly enhanced by its distinctive jewellery. The necklaces worn by the dancer plays a Crucial role in completing the dancer’s ensemble, adding layers of symbolism and beauty. It reflects the dance’s deep-rooted connection to spirituality and to the environment.
As Odissi is known for its intricate movements, its expressive gestures, and detailed storytelling, the bangles and the arm ornaments are an important part of the attire. These pieces not only complement the dancer’s attire but also highlight the fluidity of their movements. The bangles jingle with each movement and the taita highlight the dancer’s grace and precision of the hand gestures.
The Benga Patia or the waist belt serves more than an aesthetic purpose. It symbolizes the connection between the earth and the divine, highlighting the spiritual essence of Odissi dance. It not only enhances the beauty of the costume but also deepens the cultural significance of the performance.
Odissi dance jewellery is more than just accessories. It is an integral part of the dance form, enhancing not only the visual appeal but also contributing to the dancer’s performance. Each jewelry tells a story, reflecting the deep cultural roots of this ancient art form.
Much like the dance itself, Odissi dance jewellery embodies grace, beauty, and tradition. By embracing silver jewelry in Odissi dance, dancers and performers are not only showcasing their talent but also preserving and promoting the rich cultural heritage of Odisha.
The symbiotic relationship between Odissi dance and its jewelry ensures that the traditions and art forms of the region continue to thrive and evolve.

The Shishirachhanda dance festival was an unforgettable experience. The festival brought together talented artists of different artforms, each showcasing their unique talents. As a participant, I had an opportunity to perform on stage which was exciting and worrisome at the same time. The beautiful stage setup and the glimmering lights were extraordinary. Throughout the festival, I learned not only from my performance but also from the diverse artforms that had my mind blown.

I was inspired by the creativity and dedication of the guest artists and my Guru. It was a change to connect with dancers and share our experiences. The festival gave me the opportunity to explore the dance forms and techniques, pushing to grow as an artist in the field of dance. It was a celebration of culture, art, music and expressions. My experience of Shishirachanda will always remain a highlight in my dance journey.
